Cybrary.it Introduction to IT and Cybersecurity Course
Summer 2021
While I may not necessarily end up in a cybersecurity or IT position, I was curious to learn and gain an insight into what individuals working in these positions do on a daily basis and what kinds of skills they need (especially since they may be working alongside me). This course from Cybrary.it taught me about the following occupations and their necessary skills, duties, common tools, and typical salaries and certifications:
System Administrator (SysAdmin)
Network Administrator
Incident Responder (IR)
Penetration Tester (PenTester)
Cloud Engineer
Cybersecurity Manager
Privacy Analyst
Additionally, it taught me about some of the basic tools and tests they use, such as:
Using the Linux command line and Windows Powershell
Using WireShark to analyze network activity
Adding Linux users to a server group
Pointing Windows Defender to specific folders and identifying common signs of malicious software
Using Cain and Abel and similar password crackers for penetration testing purposes
